Around 7,600 workers in Western Visayas were regularized in the first half of 2018, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-6).
“We have already reached more than 50 percent of our target for this year,” said DOLE-6 Director Johnson Cañete in a press conference yesterday.
The DOLE-6 aims to regularize at least 15,000 workers in the region by the end of 2018.
“We are on track to hit our target,” said Cañete.
The director urged other companies in the region to “voluntarily regularize” their workers.
“Kapag na regularized na sila (workers) submit your reports to our office so that macount natin sila,” Cañete told employers.
Ending the practice of “endo” or end of contract and illegal contractualization was one of the campaign promises of President Rodrigo Duterte.
In May this year, Duterte signed an executive order (EO) that prohibits illegal contracting and subcontracting.
But the EO still allows some forms of contractualization.
According to Duterte, “Congress needs to enact a law amending the Labor Code in order to implement an effective and lasting solution to the problems brought about by contractualization.”
“I recommend the entire revision or revisit the previous laws,” he said.IMT
