City councilor’s cousin killed by riding-in-tandem men

Mercedes “Ging-ging” Nava, Councilor Plaridel Nava’s cousin, was shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Barangay Calajunan Mandurriao, Iloilo City Friday morning.

Nava, 65, sustained multiple gunshot wounds on her body. She was rushed to Western Visayas Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.

The victim was traveling on board a black Mitsubishi Strada pick-up on her way home when she was waylaid by two unidentified assailants riding on motorcycle at around 11 a.m.

Nava’s companion, Erwin Fontillas, 42, was also killed in the shooting incident. He suffered severe gunshot wounds.

Her two other minor companions were unhurt.

Investigators recovered at least six empty shells of .45 caliber pistol .

Chief Insp. Marlon Valencia of Mandurriao Police Station said based on their initial investigation, an unpaid debt was the reason for the killing.

In December last year, Nava claimed that all of the signatures in petitions filed against Panay Electric Co. (PECO) before Congress were forged.

In a radio interview, she said Councilors Joshua Alim and Plaridel Nava, Dr. Marigold Gonzales, daughter of Pacita Gonzalez, and Presidential Consultant for Western Visayas Jane Javellana ordered them to gather fake signatures.

Alim, Nava, Gonzalez, and Javellana denied the allegations.IMT
