Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III is considering changing the name of the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand in honor of an Ilonggo hero.
In an interview on Tuesday, Dec. 18, Espinosa said he is now looking into the possibility of renaming the grandstand after Graciano Lopez Jaena.
Jaena was a journalist. He founded La Solidaridad, a fortnightly newspaper.
The Ilonggo patriot wrote the satirical story “Fray Botod.”
Jaena was born in Jaro on December 18, 1856. He died of tuberculosis in Spain on January 20, 1896.
Meanwhile, the construction of the new Iloilo Freedom Grandstand on Muelley Loney Street is ongoing.
The old grandstand on JM Basa Street was demolished to pave the way for the restoration of the Sunburst Park.IMT
