The new grandstand on Muelle Loney Street will be named after Iloilo City’s internationally- acclaimed festival.
The move to rename the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand to “Dinagyang Grandstand” was announced by City Mayor Jose Espinosa III during their meeting yesterday, Jan. 8.
To make it official, Espinosa said he would issue an executive order.
The new grandstand was constructed after the old one was demolished to pave the way for the restoration of the Sunburst Park on J.M. Basa Street.
The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) of the Department of Tourism (DOT) alloted almost P20 million for the restoration project.
Meanwhile, the city government funded the construction of the new grandstand. The P45-million structure is expected to be fully completed before the highlights of this year’s Dinagyang Festival on Jan. 25 to 27.
According to engineer Roberto Divinagracia of the City Engineer’s Office, the new grandstand is bigger than the old one, which can only accomodate 1000 people.
“Ang ining bag-o kaya niya mag-accomodate sang 1,960 people. Dako ni iya nga lounge kag comfort rooms,” he said.IMT
