Former Iloilo City councilor and Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Ma. Rita Bascos Sarabia passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 26.
Sarabia died of complications from major burn injuries, her son Rex Sarabia said.
The lady judge sustained third-degree burns after the liquid petroleum gas (LPG ) tank inside their house exploded last week.
“For six agonizing days, she was a warrior to the last second,”Rex said.
Rita served as councilor of the city from 1998 to 2004.
After finishing her second term, Rita was appointed as RTC judge in Negros Occidental. She also served as judge in Quezon City RTC and Makati City RTC.
Rex said her mother was a “fiery champion of the poor.”
“She fought for their rights and welfare, she also fought against tyranny and oppression during the Marcos Regime, she fought to deliver justice in our society as a lawyer and a judge. This brave girl from Jaro, however, fought her last fight.”
Rex is running for councilor of the city under Mayor Jose Espinosa III’s slate next year.IMT
