Governor Samuel Gumarin is seeing a surge in tourist arrivals in the province of Guimaras this year.

The provincial government targets a 15 percent increase in the number of tourists by the end of 2018.

Gumarin is optimistic that they will hit or even surpass the target.

Last year, the island-province welcomed about 128 thousand local and foreign tourists.

The governor said he expects the 2018 edition of the Manggahan Festival, the province’s major tourist drawer, will lure more than a hundred thousand tourists.

In 2017, the festival attracted 68, 550 tourists.

Meanwhile, Liberty Ferrer, provincial tourism officer, said they are doubling their efforts to promote their destinations as alternatives to Boracay Island in Malay Aklan.

She said that aside from sweet mangoes, Guimaras is also blessed with pristine beaches. Kate Naelga/IMT News
