The Iloilo Sports Complex in Barangay Magsaysay, La Paz distict, Iloilo City will be temporarily closed to the public starting tomorrow, October 18.
The closure of the sports complex is until December 3 to pave the way for the rehabilitation of the asphalt sub base and installation of new polyurethane rubber surface of its track oval.
According to Pablito Araneta, one of the sports consultants of Governor Arthur Defensor Sr, the installation of polyurethane rubber will be made by Spurway Enterprises, a Manila-based company.
The installation, amounting to about P13 million, will commence once the Bids and Awards Committee determines the lowest- calculated and responsive bid for the asphalt overlay on October 28.
“We are closing the Iloilo Sports Complex temporarily as we prepare the ground for asphalt overlay work,” Araneta explained.
Last year, the track oval of the Iloilo Sports Complex underwent repair that costs the province around P100,000.
The repaired oval, however, did not last after a number of sports events hosted by the city and province of Iloilo.
The poor state of the track oval made the governor decide to allocate P14.3 million in capital outlay to truly rehabilitate it this year.
On May 13, a public bidding for its rehabilitation was held wherein AHAE Traffic and Coliseum Traders submitted a bid for P12.4 million but was later disqualified.
BAC found that its bid documents were not in order and chose the second lowest bidder instead — Spurway.
A notice to proceed was then issued to the contractor last August 3 and the polyurethane rubber was removed and transferred without cost to Leganes.
Given a good weather condition, the contractor assured Defensor that they can finish the installation on the first week of December.
“There will be a provincial integrated meet this December and we wanted the job done before that,” Araneta said.
Meanwhile, those swimmers who will vie for Batang Pinoy will be allowed to use the swimming pool at the Iloilo Sports Complex from 5:00-7:00 a.m. only.
Other sports facilities inside the complex like the courts for tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball and soccer field will remain close until the rehabilitation is completed.x
