Parents play a “very important role” in preventing rape, according to the Police Regional Office (PRO-6).

Chief Insp. Joem Malong, PRO-6 spokesperson, said parents and guardians should be vigilant and always remind their children to stay away from people or situations which can lead to sexual abuse.

Last year, PRO-6 recorded a total of 745 rape cases.

Negros Occidental had the highest cases with 231, followed by Iloilo province, 194; Bacolod City, 81; Aklan, 59; Antique, 40; Iloilo City, 36; and Guimaras, 20.

The PRO-6 data also showed that most of the victims were minors.

Of the total number, 341 were females aging from 12 to 17 years old, 204 were 12 years old and below, 126 were from 18 to 25 years old, 46 were from 26 to 36 years old, and 14 were 37 years old and above.

Malong said most victims were raped inside their houses or the suspects’ houses.IMT
