Quakes damage structures in Iloilo

A series of earthquakes rattled parts of Western Visayas on Monday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said at least 10 quakes ranging from magnitude 2 to 4.8 struck Iloilo, Guimaras and Antique.

The first quake hit at 7:45 a.m with a magnitude of 4.7. Its epicenter was traced 8 kilometers southeast of San Jose, Antique

The 8-kilometer deep quake was felt at Intensity III in Iloilo City.

It was followed by weaker quakes that occurred in Sibunag and Buenavista, Guimaras.

At 10:54 a.m., a 4.8 magnitude quake struck 5 kilometers northwest of Guimbal, Iloilo.

The 3-kilometer deep quake was felt at Intensity IV in Iloilo City and San Jose de Buenavista in Antique; Intensity III in Roxas City, Dao in Capiz and Belison in Antique; and Intensity II in Cadiz in Negros Oriental and President Roxas in Capiz.

Instrumental Intensity III was recorded in Culasi in Antique.

Minutes later, five more quakes measuring between magnitude 2 to 2.5 hit Leon, Iloilo.

The Phivolcs said all the earthquakes were tectonic in origin.

“Posibling earthquake swarm ang nangyari kaninang umaga kasi more or less magkakapareho po ng magnitude at walang distinct na mas mataas,” said Phivolcs OIC Renato Solidum in a report by ABS-CBN News.

Iloilo City MayorJose Espinosa III and some town mayors ordered the suspension of afternoon classes (all levels) in both public and private schools after the 4.8 quake.

Office work at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol and City Hall was also suspended.

PhilHealth and GSIS offices in the city was closed.

There were no casualties reported but one was slightly injured following the series of quakes.

A pupil of Igcocolo Elementary School in Guimbal obtained a small abrasion after a portion of their classroom’s ceiling collapsed.

Meanwhile, those students who felt dizzy were provided with medical attention.

Rep. Pedro G. Trono Memorial District Hospital and several schools in Guimbal as well as in Barotac Nuevo and Iloilo City sustained cracks.

On the other hand, the belfry of Tubungan Parish Church suffered minor damage.

In Alimodian, the walls of Saint Thomas of Villanueva Church were impaired.
