Representative Jerry P. Treñas on Friday declared to run for mayor of Iloilo City in the 2019 elections.
The declaration was made by Treñas during a meeting with punong barangays at his office in City Proper.
The last-termer congressman, in a press conference after the meeting, said his mayoral bid was a consensus of the city’s village chiefs.
“Ang akon gin-ubra gin-imbitar ko ang mga kapitanes naton kag ginkuha ko ang consensus nila,” he explained.
According to Treñas, before the meeting, he had no idea that the punong barangays would push him to run for mayor of the city.
“Ginpamangkot ko sila kon ano ang aton pwesto nga pungkuan para mapadayon ang aton solid nga grupo, ang sabat nila sa akon, gusto nila mapadalagan ko mayor,” he said.
“Kon mapadalagan ako barangay kapitan sang Dungon, basi maperdi ako. Kon konsehal ako, may ara naman Treñas nga mapadalagan (he’s refering to Councilor Jay). Kon vice mayor naman, ti damu naman mapadalagan. And I can no longer run naman for congressman.”
Before he was elected as congressman in 2010, Treñas served as mayor of the city for three terms (2001-2004, 2004-2007, 2007-2010).
Treñas is currently under a 90-day preventive suspension.
The preventive suspension was ordered by the Sandiganbayan in connection with the graft case being faced by the legislator.IMT
