The United Gamefowl Breeders’ Association of Panay (UGBAP), Inc., based in Iloilo City held its highly successful Dinagyang 6 Cock Derby series, culminating at the newly reinvigorated New Camp Cavaliers’Cockpit in Cabatuan, Iloilo. Two eliminations were held at the Oton (Iloilo) Cockpit, two at the New Camp Cavaliers’ Cockpit for a total of 173 fights. The final event was held at the latter venue on January 21, 2017 for a total of 204 entries and more than 200 finals fights. 31 entries joined for the straight six format.

The shift to the New Camp Cavaliers’ Cockpit was a result of the disagreement between the UGBAP officers and the management of Iloilo Coliseum, the original venue of the series. Iloilo Coliseum did not accept UGBAP’s official video company which has generously offered UGBAP an annual gift of P1.5 million in exchange for exclusive rights to video the fights. No other video company matched the offer of the said company. It appeared that the said video company has an unresolved issue with Iloilo Coliseum and the latter refused to allow the said video company in its premises. During the General Assembly of UGBAP held in December, active members voted 29-21 in favor of relocating to New Camp Cavaliers’ Cockpit as the main venue of big UGBAP events instead of Iloilo Coliseum for the obvious reason of availing of the gift of P1.5 milliion as well as other benefits such as bigger share of the revenues during the events. Computing the financial advantages earned, UGBAP foresees an increase of at least 30% more revenues if it relocates at the New Camp Cavaliers’ Cockpit.

When interviewed, Engr. Rene Medrano, current president of UGBAP stated that it was really a business decision, nothing else. “New Camp Cavaliers’ Cockpit offered an attractive financial deal, assuring us of a nice venue approximating Iloilo Coliseum and we also stand to gain from the gift of the video company. Last year we received the same amount but there was less hustle then. I was only now that an issue erupted between the two parties and we did not want to lose out on our arrangement”. Internal computations project a revenue loss of almost two million pesos if UGBAP chose to remain at the Iloilo Coliseum.

“Our highly successful Dinagyang 6 Cock Derby event proved that. We projected a total of 170 entries and we exceeded that by 34 more. We stand to earn more from the gate revenues and the “plasadas” because of the bigger percentage share in the revenues. We also get our 10% share of the pot money wholly because the management of New Camp Cavaliers’ Cockpit will not demand its own percentage cut”.

With more revenues, members will get higher dividends at the year end general assembly. UGBAP retains just 10% of the net earnings and return the balance to the members equitably computed based on their participation in derbies during the year. “We expect to grow more and have better services for our members especially since we have partnered with the management of the New Camp Cavaliers’ Cockpit. Mayor Locsin continues to improve the facilities and we are not surprised that in the next two or three years, it will become the cockpit of choice in our province”.
