With 21.042 million allocated budget, 8,443 youth in Western Visayas (WV) will benefit in the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) of the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE-6).
According to Regional Director, Ponciano Ligutom, as of January 25, 2013, the budget of every province in WV are as follow: Aklan – 1.483 million, Antique – 1.543 million, Capiz – 2.101 million, Guimaras – 453 thousand, Iloilo – 6. 322 million, and Negross Occidental – 8. 596 million.
He added that DOLE has 40-percent intended counterpart fund for the program and the 60 percent is paid for in cash by the employers.
Based on the recent record of DOLE- 6, they have confirmed 9,373 total job pledges; 7, 414 comes from the government and 1, 954 from private companies.
The Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) is mandated under Republic Act No. 9547 otherwise known as “An Act To Help Poor But Deserving Students Pursue Their Education By Encouraging Their Employment During Summer and/or Christmas Vacations, Through Incentives Granted to Employers, Allowing Them to Pay Only Sixty Per Centum of Their Salaries or Wages and The Forty Per Centum Through Education Vouchers To Be Paid By the Government, Prohibiting and Penalizing The Filing of Fraudulent and Fictitious Claims, and For Other Purposes”.
The said program aims to help poor but deserving students to pursue their educationby providing income or augment their income. Student-beneficiaries are assigned to work in SPES-registered private establishments, government institutions, and departments.
DOLE-6 said that they are already accepting applications from interested students through thePublic Employment and Service Office (PESO) of participating local government units (LGUs).
