The Iloilo City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution calling for the demolition of structures around the public plaza of Jaro district.
Seven councilors voted in favor of the resolution, two opposed, and four abstained.
Those who voted yes were Councilors Plaridel Nava, Joshua Alim, Ely Estante, Jay Treñas, Lady Julie Grace Baronda, Leila Luntao, and Maria Irene Ong.
On ther other hand, Councilors Lyndon Acap, and Ed Peñaredondo were against the resolution.
Councilors R Leone Gerochi, Mandrei Malabor, Candice Tupas, and Liezl Joy Zulueta-Salazar abstain from voting.
The resolution asked the Task Force on Anti-Squatting and Illegal Structures (TF Asis), which is under the city government’s Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), to carry out the demolition.
A portion of Rizal Street was temporarily closed to give way to kiosks and rides.
The closure, approved by City Mayor Jose Espinosa III, is part of the Jaro Agro-Industrial Fair, one of the activities in line with this year’s celebration of Jaro Fiesta or the Feast of Our Lady of Candles.IMT
