The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6) is hoping that a pedestrian overpass with elevators in Iloilo City will be fully functional before the end of the first quarter of 2019.

The “state-of-the-art” overpass along Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue (Diversion Road) in Mandurriao district has remained unused since it was inuagurated by the DPWH-6 in 2015.

According to Vivian Tan of the DPWH-6’s Public Affairs and Information Office, the city government has yet to accept the project.

“Hopefully, maturn turn over na sya sa city government next month,” she said.

The P19-million project was funded by the Road Board, an attached agency of the DPWH.

According to Tan, the city government wants the DPWH to install steel gates around the elevators.

Wala problema sa duha ka elevators. Wala sya gafunction kay wala pa napirmahan sang city government ang papers nga ginabaton nila ang project tungod may ginrequest sila nga steel gates para maprotektahan ang elevators,” she explained.

Tan said the installation of steel gates is not included in the contract but after the coordination meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 26, F. Gurrea Construction, the contractor, decided to grant the city government’s request.

The elevators at both ends of the pedestrian overpass are intended mainly for persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and pregnant women.IMT
