The province of Guimaras will host the 20th National Mango Congress next year in time for the 25th Manggahan Festival.
The Philippine Mango Industry Foundation Inc. (PMIFI) with the Guimaras Mango Growers and Producers Development Cooperative (GMGPDC) as the host association and in partnership with the provincial government and the Department of Agriculture (DA) will lead the national event in 2018.
Together with GMGPDC President Rosario Griesser and Provincial Agricultural and Fishery Council (PAFC) President Ramon Marañon, Governor Samuel T. Gumarin officially received the Key of Responsibility on November 29th in Cagayan de Oro where this year’s Congress was held.
“We are pleased and honored to accept the responsibility of having this event next year. This will boost not only the market for mangoes as a banner crop but the relations of the mango industry and key players in the country,” Governor Gumarin said in his acceptance speech.
He further shared about the policies to manage and protect mangoes.
“In order to improve our production for both fresh and processed mangoes and strengthen our market position domestically and globally despite adverse effects of global warming, we continue to push for policies that protect this asset,” he said.
“Protecting this means we also strengthen our economic drivers: agriculture, fishery and tourism, which all have interlocking and dynamic relationship to our mangoes. Likewise, harvesting, marketing and production are regulated and the island is declared a special quarantine zone,” he added.
The said Congress is an annual event that aims to discuss and provide solutions to the problems of the industry through the help of the government, specifically the LGU and DA, private companies, and through the cooperation among mango contractors themselves.
