According to Sherlyn, she is very thankful for the opportunity that was given to her family. Being the 4th runner-up in the national search, is so far the highest award they received as Pantawid Pamilya beneficiary.
“I am forever thankful to our government especially to the program. I hope more families will be given this kind of opportunity just like what we are enjoying as of now,” she said.
Sherlyn said the prize they received will be used as additional capital for their buy and sell scrap materials while the prize of P 13, 000 they received from the regional search will be used for the construction of their house made from light materials.
Roxas City in Capiz has been known as the “Seafood Capital of the Philippines” with its abundance of marine life such as tilapia, bangus, scallops, oysters, scrimps, fish and other shells. Roxas City is a three-hour bus ride away from Iloilo City but the long ride isn’t so much of a hassle for the delicious seafood are what attract tourists to visit and experience the mouthwatering delicacies fresh from the sea.
One of the richest fishing grounds of Roxas City is Sitio Proper in Barangay Bago. This is also where the Bonite family lives. The place is abundant in fresh water fishes, particularly catfish, which is one of the family’s main source of income.
The couple, is blessed with nine children whom two are currently covered by the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Programafter they became a beneficiary of the program in 2011. Five of their children had already finished college and now working.
Both couple have a good standing record in the community, the reason why Sherlyn was chosen by her members to be their parent leader. Sherlyn enjoys the trust and confidence her co-beneficiaries have on her which open many opportunities that meanwhile help to the empowerment of the Bonite family.
Sherlyn handles many important positions in their barangay such as Parent Leader of 4Ps, Barangay Health Worker (BHW), Gender and Development (GAD) focal, Barangay Anti-Drugs Abuse Council (BADAC) referral desk officer, Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) focal, Sustainable Llivelihood Program (SLP) president, Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPC) focal, Lady Tanod and Parents Teachers Association (PTA) President.
Since she is one of the empowered parent leaders, she takes initiative in conducting a Family Development Session (FDS) together with other government partner implementers. The FDS is one of the venue where she could campaign all her advocacies particularly against the use of illegal drugs, promote women and children’s rights, gender sensitivity, peace and order, healthy lifestyle and 100% compliant in school attendance.
On the other hand, Eugene, a very loving husband to his wife and a responsible father to his nine children, always makes sure that despite the family’s busy schedule in school and in the community, he is there to support them all throughout. There is a saying that “Behind the woman’s success is a man” because Eugene serves as the official driver and constant companion of Sherly wherever she goes. Eugene is always the extension arm to all of his wife’s understakings.
Both couple attended many seminars and trainings that could help improve their living conditions. Among them are disaster preparedness and mitigation, livelihood and responsible parenthood.
Above everything, the couple is making sure that they religiously follow all the conditions set by the program particularly on health and education of their children./dswd6
