Iloilo City records highest HIV cases in WV

The city of Iloilo has the highest number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in Western Visayas (WV), according to the Department of Health (DOH) Region VI.

Out of 807 cases of HIV and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the region from 1984 to February this year, 220 cases were from Iloilo City.

It is followed by Bacolod City with 160 cases; Negros Occidental, 145; Iloilo province, 135; Capiz, 54; Aklan, 51; Antique,28; and Guimaras, 14.

HIV Surveillance Assistant Rodolfo Chin, Jr. however, clarified that the figures are not alarming.

Chin said, that in every 36 hours, one person in the region is diagnosed with HIV.

According to MedlinePlus, a health website, HIV kills or damages the body’s immune system cells.

It leads to a condition called AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), an incurable symptom of failing immune system which eventually leads to death, GMANews Online reported.

Regional Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Nurse Corrdinator Christine Mosqueda said sexual contact is still the primary cause of HIV. “Most cases were caused by men having sex with other men.”

HIV can also be transmitted through injection and blood transfusion. IMT
