The province of Iloilo is the number one producer of rice in Western Visayas, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA-6).
In 2018, Iloilo posted a total rice production of 939,332 metric tons (MT), the highest among the region’s six provinces and the fourth highest among all provinces in the country.
Negros Occidental came in second with 486,038 MT, followed by Capiz, 347,129 MT; Antique, 307,458 MT; Aklan, 106,608 MT; and Guimaras, 45,728 MT.
The provinces of Antique and Negros Occidental recorded a significant increase in palay production last year comprared to 2017’s 293,098 MT and 474,874 MT, respectively.
Overall, the region produced 2,232,293 MT of palay in 2018, the third highest in the country next to Cagayan Valley with 2,379,771 MT and Central Luzon with 3,615,115 MT.
In terms of total harvest area, WV ranked second with 668, 861 hectares next to Central Luzon with 727,704 hectares.
“We are lucky that our rice farmers experienced no significant damage caused by major calamities like strong typhoons and pests and diseases outbreaks last year,” said Remelyn R. Recoter, DA-6 regional executive director.IMT
