Ilonggo athletes shine despite delayed Palaro allowances

The 2019 edition of the Palarong Pambansa is officially closed, but athletes from the province of Iloilo have not yet received their allowances.

Dr. Mac Apusin, Iloilo schools division superintendent, said the release of a fund for the allowances of athletes as well as their coaches and trainers is delayed because of the election ban.

The release and disbursement of public funds, under Resolution No. 10429 released by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), are prohibited between March 29 and May 12.

Apusin said they are still waiting for the Comelec’s approval of the provincial government’ request to exempt the fund alloted for the Palaro, which was held in Davao City from April 28 to May 5.

Edwin Caro Laruan, one of the coaches, expressed disappointment over the delay.

Gatulok tulok lang kami sa iban nga athletes from other provinces nga may mga souvenir na. Bisan key chain na lang ka dya mabakal da,” he said in his Facebook post on May 3.

But despite the delay, Caro said the student-athletes performed well in their respective games.

Bisan wala lang kami allowance but still the boys are playing what they got. Play with heart lang kami di,” he said.

Western Visayas garnered a total of 49 gold, 40 silver, and 58 bronze medals. It ranked third in the final medal tally.

Among the Ilonggo gold medalists are Vince Jayson Buhayan of Carles town, Alfrence Braza of Iloilo City, and Alexie Brooks of Leon town.

The region’s footbal team, which was represented by athletes from Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High School, emerged victorious in their game.
