Jaywalking is among the major contributors to traffic problems in Iloilo City, according to the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO).
PSTMO head Jeck Conlu lamented that a lot of people, based on their observation, are not making use of pedestrian lanes and overhead walkways.
This practice, he said, causes traffic congestion and road accidents in the city.
To address the problem, Conlu said they deployed more traffic personnel to strictly enforce the anti-jaywalking ordinance and other traffic measures.
PSTMO was augmented with 80 personnel.
“These additional personnel have been assigned along Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue (Diversion Road) in Mandurriao district, downtown area, and near schools, among others,” Conlu said.
“They will also ensure that vendors will not litter or obstruct sidewalks,” he added.
The PSTMO head also offered to supervise the operations of the overoass with elevators along Diversion Road.IMT
