Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. on Tuesday said he would invite representatives from the private sector to explore investment opportunities in northern Iloilo.

The northern part of the province is blessed with pristine beaches and other beautiful places but according to Defensor, it lacks accommodation establishments to cater to both local and foreign tourists.

“It also has few dining establishments and inadequate transportation facilities,” he added.

The governor said he would set meetings with concerned government agencies and mayors in northern Iloilo to discuss how to attract investors.

Meanwhile, Department of Tourism (DOT-6) Director Helen Catalbas suggested a three to four-month closure of Islas de Gigantes in the town of Carles.

Islas de Gigantes is an island chain consisting of more than 10 islets like Cabugao Gamay, Bantigue, Cabugao Daku and Pulupandan.

Catalbas said the temporary shutdown will give owners of the existing establishments on the island to improve their facilities.

Carles Mayor Siegfredo Betita was amenable to Catalbas’ suggestion.

He said he would create a committee to assess the compliance of establishments to rules and regulations, ordinances and other laws

Betita noted that there are about 36 establishments operating on the island.

“The final decision will be made after all the affected establishments are consulted,” the mayor said.IMT

  1. Catalbas think more closely people and owner of that resort have no enough resources to make this beaches more competitive. They need the support of DOT if DOT have plan to close these beaches. Don’t just closed without any resources to pour in these beaches. Don’t just follow boracay which Digong closed due to over crowded. Think Think Think
