Pontevedra mayor won’t support son’s gubernatorial bid in 2019 polls

Pontevedra Mayor Esteban “Dodoy” Espinosa Contreras, a Liberal Party (LP) member, said he would not support his son, last-termer Vice Governor Esteban “Nonoy” Contreras, once the latter decides to run against incumbent Governor Antonio del Rosario in the gubernatorial race next year.

“I will respect his decision to run as governor but the Contreras clan will not support him” Dodoy told reporters.

According to Nonoy, he did not push through with his plan to run for governor in 2016 because former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary Mar Roxas promised to support him in 2019.

Roxas, however, strongly denied the promise. He dismissed Nonoy’s claim as “propaganda and advertisement.”

Del Rosario, on the other hand, recognized the deal with Nonoy in 2016 but he said that it was the LP that wanted him to seek for reelection next year.

He said Roxas offered Nonoy to run for mayor of Pontevedra and his brother, former mayor Steve, will be given a slot as board member in the First District.

Meanwhile, Hipona Village Chief Resty Oquendo said that his nephew, last-termer Vice Mayor Nelson Oquendo, will be the mayoral candidate of LP in Pontevedra in case Nonoy pursues his plan to run for governor of the province. IMT
