The death of Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute is not just about the bullets, courage, and the perseverance of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police if ever the police have contributed anything significant in the deadly and costly military campaign in recent Philippine history as the Marawi siege and birth of the ISIS-Maute group would not have been possible if only everybody diligently did their job.
It is more on the leadership style of President Rodrigo Duterte and his political will which in several instances has divided the nation in so far as his ways of literally showing it in full colors.
The deposed President Joseph Estrada has conquered Camp Abu Bakar of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) when he ordered an all-out military offensive against the group but what MILF was fighting for is more on a secessionist’s perspective as they wanted to separate Mindanao from Imperial Manila. Of course there were deaths from both sides.
Nothing can compare though to the deaths of 163 soldiers, 47 civilians and 847 Maute fighters. It is the cost of President Duterte’s resolve to restore order and democracy in Marawi City and show the world that terrorism has no place in this democratic country. It is the price of fighting for freedom and a safe country.
He may have failed a many in his ruthless and many times careless policies towards illegal drugs when he could have done it within the bounds of the law and reason. Perhaps in his desire to unite the country, his political actions and ego have wounded the nation and its people so that anyone who questions or argues against him is labeled dilawan while those who agree with him is called a blind supporter and a troll at worst uto-uto.
A snappy salute though to the man who threatened that he will devour the flesh of any captured ISIS-Maute terrorist group member.
It’s not an easy military affair to manage for a leader who spent decades only as a city mayor and in the infancy of his leadership as the Commander-in-Chief was forced to confront the newest form of world evil in the confines of his country.
With the help of the able Armed Forces of the Philippines, Marawi City and the whole Filipino nation can now take a breath of relief and tell the world that yes the Filipinos can.
We have to give it to Mayor Digong.
